It’s the New Year. There’s talk of resolutions in the air. I’m not one to declare New Year’s resolutions. If I have a goal or ambition, I can’t wait until the beginning of the year to pursue it! Plus there’s that whole setting-your-self-up-for-failure thing.  Anyway, I didn’t come here today to rant …

Rather, I’m here to announce the LiveSimplyLove New Year’s Marriage Book Giveaway!

Last month I entered a giveaway for a KitchenAid Mixer {Yes! I’m a newlywed and don’t have one! We didn’t register for a mixer because we didn’t think we’d need one. I’ve obviously been rethinking that decision.}

While I didn’t win the mixer {sad face}, I was inspired to run a giveaway on LiveSimplyLove in order to share some of the resources I’ve found helpful in preparing for marriage, managing my expectations, and learning how to manage conflict in the midst of living, breathing, and sleeping every day next to the one I love.

Blogging has taught me that if I want something I should just ask! So that’s what I did. Every prize in this giveaway was donated. Let me tell you, I was FLOORED to receive emails that said “Yes, we’d love to donate a book [or two]!” and then even more excited when they began arriving in the mail. All for you, dear readers!

I want to confess another motivation for doing this as well. Along with the hope that you’ll walk away with a book that will really help your marriage {or help you prepare for your future marriage} I’m hoping this giveaway will give you reason to tell your friends, family members, Facebook friends, Twitter stream, next door neighbors, long-lost relatives, hair stylist, and dog walker about LiveSimplyLove.

I’m not looking for a flash in the pan of new readers just for the sake of flashing {that sounded weird}. Instead… I would love to attract more readers who are truly interested in the topic of marriage. So, thanks for whatever you can do to help me spread the word.

Without further ado…here’s a brief description of the books that are up for grabs in this giveaway. {Before you enter be sure to read the brief rules below as well as the Official Sweepstakes Rules.}

A Lasting Promise: A Christian Guide to Fighting for Your Marriage by Scott Stanley, Daniel Trathen, Savanna McCain & Milt Bryan

LastingPromise 300x233 New Year’s Marriage Book GiveawayThe book is the foundation of most of the communication and conflict management skills we’ve learned in marriage. My Make-Up-Monday series on How Not to be a WENI is based on content in this book about the damaging effects of negative communication styles.

A Lasting Promise provides practical examples of how to work through conflict, deal with unmet expectations, forgive one another and then restore intimacy, and protect your marriage from divorce. This book is helpful, whether your marriage is great and you want to ensure it stays that way or if you’re struggling and aren’t sure where to turn next. And, married or not, the communication tools are crucial for any relationship. Many thanks to Scott Stanley for his encouragement and for donating this book and several other resources, including a prayer journal, which will be paired with this book for the giveaway.

Sacred Marriage Gift Edition by Gary Thomas

SacredMarriage 300x288 New Year’s Marriage Book GiveawayBelieve it or not, I read almost all of Sacred Marriage on our honeymoon!! The tagline for the book is: What if God Designed Marriage to Make Us Holy More Than to Make Us Happy? It’s certainly not the perspective of our culture today, right? And that’s one of the reasons I liked it so much.

Thomas tackles the way we’ve romanticized marriage and turns it on its head. He talks about what it really is to LOVE another person even when it hurts, forgive, and treat one another with respect. He shares what it is to really serve another person; and he highlights that marriage is the perfect laboratory for exposing our sin and understanding our true need for God and His forgiveness in our own lives. This is NOT an emotionally easy book to read, especially if your marriage is difficult, but it is a good book to read. Gary Thomas autographed and donated this hardcover Gift Edition which also includes 52 devotions to enhance spiritual intimacy with your spouse. Thank you Gary!!

Sacred Influence by Gary Thomas

SacredInfluence 300x272 New Year’s Marriage Book GiveawayOther than glancing at a few chapters, I haven’t read this one but it looks just as good as Thomas’ book Sacred Marriage. The subtitle is: How God Uses Wives to Shape the Souls of Their Husbands. So this one is specifically for wives and includes practical applications to help you bring about positive change in your marriage. Thomas writes an especially interesting chapter on how brain chemistry differs for men and explains why “talking things out” may take more time and is a bit more challenging for the average male. {The Husband and I thought that was fascinating!} I’m grateful to Gary Thomas for autographing and donating this book, which I didn’t even think to request, to be given away!

The Love & Respect Experience by Emerson Eggerichs

LoveRespect 195x300 New Year’s Marriage Book GiveawayThis devotional comes with the subtitle: A Husband-Friendly Devotional that Wives Truly Love. The book Love & Respect, upon which this devotional is based, was one of those eye-opener books that helped me begin to understand the differences between men and women. It helped me see why some things I said or did ACTUALLY communicated disrespect to my husband {even if they seemed totally neutral to me} and why some things he did or said didn’t feel loving to me {when, in fact he wasn’t trying to be unloving at all}. Love & Respect literally helped translate things I didn’t understand about my husband.

Eggerichs writes about the Crazy Cycle that’s common in male/female relationships {based on mutual misunderstandings}, helps you figure out what to do when you’re there and, more importantly, how to avoid getting there in the first place. If you feel like you and your spouse {or significant other} are totally missing each other when you try to talk things through, this is the book for you! This beautiful leather-covered devotional book was donated by PR by the Book and Love & Respect Ministries, Inc.

The Meaning of Marriage by Timothy Keller

MeaningMarriage 166x300 New Year’s Marriage Book GiveawayI’ll admit, I just recently got a copy of this one, and I’m not through reading it yet. But I’ve listened to Tim Keller sermons and read his other books and writings over the last decade, and I know that he’s a powerful speaker with a lasting marriage. He has years of experiential research under his belt understanding human behavior, relationships, and perspectives about God. I can only believe that what he has to say in The Meaning of Marriage would be well worth your time. Many thanks to Penguin Group (USA) Inc. for donating a hardcover version of this book.

The Power of Commitment by Scott Stanley

Here’s another one I haven’t read, but I can’t wait to crack it open! A testimonial on the back cover says, PwrCommitment 300x293 New Year’s Marriage Book Giveaway“This book should be mandatory reading for dating, engaged, newlywed and not-so-newlywed couples.” Author of A Lasting Promise, Scott Stanley writes about how we can better understand and appreciate the value of commitment with the goal of making it last a lifetime. Countless couples arrive at the alter thinking “Til death do us part” yet end up in what Scott calls a “Maybe I Do” marriage. His hope is that more couples will begin to understand commitment in a world where 50% of marriages end in divorce. Scott Stanley generously donated a copy of this book.

I would love to have the Love & Respect Experience. Although I’ve been married (happily) for over 20 years — we still encounter male/female communications differences. I would love to understand these better.

I’d like to win sacred Marriage Gift Edition by Gary Thomas. If you read it during your honeymoon, it must be good! I’m pursuing a relationship which may lead to marriage (I hope it does.). I want to be prepared. I want to practice that love now.

Merritt January 6, 2012 at 11:17 pm

I know…seems odd to read a book on my honeymoon, but it was sooo good! Best wishes on your relationship Brian!!

I would love to win Sacred Influence! Sacred Marriage was so insightful and I learned so much from it about the Biblical perspective needed in marriage. I also read Sacred Parenting and have the same praises. I can only imagine that Sacred Influence would be just as educating, equipping, and encouraging for me as a wife who desires to bring glory to the Lord, all because I said “I do” :-)

Laura January 6, 2012 at 3:58 pm

Oops, I forgot to say why… :) Sacred Marriage Gift because: The Holy vs Happy question is one that has truly resonated with me as I have wrestled with it in many areas, most prevalently marriage. While we are happily married (1 1/2 yrs), I know this is an area in which I could use growth!

Laura January 7, 2012 at 5:02 pm

I’d love to read Tim Keller’s book on marriage. I attended his church for nearly 6 years while living in New York City in my early 20s and since moving away from the city (and being married for nearly 5 years, with bumps along the way, who doesn’t?!), I’d love to read his book with fresh eyes on God, my husband, and my marriage. Thanks!

Katy @ OurSimpleLoveStory January 7, 2012 at 5:49 pm

I would love the Love and Respect book. We are actually studying his original book in our small group! When my husband and I were looking for daily devo books for the year, we almost got this one!

Emma January 9, 2012 at 8:50 am

I would love to win Tim Keller’s book. I find that his writing style and rhetoric really affect me deeply, opening up areas for examination that are otherwise left shut.

Kesliea Cerda January 9, 2012 at 1:41 pm

I would love to win Gary Thomas’ Sacred Marriage. We are going on our second year of marriage and are also a step family so we need all the help we can get. Also, I have only heard good things about this book and we don’t currently own a copy so it would be awesome to win a copy!

Ashleigh January 9, 2012 at 1:48 pm

I would like to win Sacred Influence. After reading Sacred Marriage and highliting nearly every single line, it became the single most influential book in my new marriage. After a year and a half into our marriage and a child later, I still find myself repeating while I do the dishes and feel unappreciated, “Serve even when you’re not being served.” That line has helped me continue to have the heart of Christ. My husband is an awesome man and loves Christ- he also relies on money for security. What was once enough, is not enough saved anymore. It’s not in a bad way yet- but I want so badly for his heart (and mine) to find security in Christ alone- …I just want to be a good influence and I want to be the best wife I can be, because he really deserves it.

Becky Bilby January 9, 2012 at 1:55 pm

I would love to win The Meaning of Marriage by Keller – it’s the ONE I haven’t read!! ;) Thanks!

Sacred Influence sounds like the perfect book for me! I am getting married this summer (for the second time) and have been working so hard to prepare myself to be the wife my wonderful fiancee needs me to be. I didn’t do a great time the first time around but I know this time will be part of God’s plan. :)

I subscribed via Google Reader too!
THANK YOU!!!

Pamela Bach-Johns January 9, 2012 at 2:04 pm

I have already read Sacred Marriage and it really helped me change my attitude about what marriage really means and, along with counseling and much prayer, helped save my marriage. I would like to have Sacred Influence as a follow-up. Gary did such a great job with Sacred Marriage!

Heather January 9, 2012 at 2:37 pm

I would love to win Sacred Influence. I have read Sacred Marriage and attended the Sacred Marriage conference led by Gary Thomas. I will be attending Sacred Parenting conference in the spring. I feel like this book would help me continue to grow in keeping things holy in my life and putting God first in marriage, parenting, life in general!

Kela January 9, 2012 at 2:49 pm

I would like to win Sacred Marriage. This will be a gift for my daughter and her fiance! Sacred Marriage has helped me tremendously and I want to pass the blessing on to them!

Angie Pearson January 9, 2012 at 3:31 pm

I would most like to win Sacred Influence. I just bought Sacred Marriage, after a friend told me about it. I have already read Love and Respect. The others sound great, but I am really intrigued by what I have heard about Gary Thomas’ books.

I would most like to win the Tim Keller book, because I’ve read so many reviews that place it among the top books on Christian marriage. I’ve read Sacred Marriage and Sacred Influence- both of which are excellent- so I’d be happy to pass those along to friends. Thank you for this chance to win!

Jody Watkins January 9, 2012 at 4:40 pm

All of these sound great! My husband and I are newlyweds and have been looking for some good, Christian marriage books so that we can strengthen our marriage! The love and respect book and sacred influence are the two that stand out the most to me but they all sound wonderful! Thanks for putting this together and glad I found your blog!

So glad you found it too! Thanks for entering. :)

Meaning of Marriage.
I have 2 of the others. I am mentoring a young innercity unmarried couple that have a baby together. I am teaching them the ways of the Lord in reference to marriage. They have so much stacked against them! Poverty, culture, age, past, circumstances. They do love the Lord and want to have victory over their circumstances!!!

Kelly January 10, 2012 at 8:03 am

I think that a few look really good but the one that jumps out to me most is Sacred Influence by Gary Thomas.

Sarah January 10, 2012 at 10:49 am

I think that the first one, A Lasting Promise, may be the most helpful at this point as our marriage is on the border of divorce. I cry as I type this because we are madly in love with each other but have been struggling for about a year. Any help that we can get would be so much appreciated! We really need it.

Merritt January 10, 2012 at 11:55 am

Sarah, Thanks so much for your honesty. I’m so sorry you guys are struggling. I think Lasting Promise is a great choice! Hope you win it. And I’ll be praying for you and your marriage.

Sarah January 10, 2012 at 12:59 pm

thanks. we need it

The Love & Respect Experience by Emerson Eggerichs
My husband and I are working on our path to become deciples. The biggest challenge for me is finding ways to submit to him. I take on a senior leadership position at the job that I have had for 9 years. With a fairly new(er) marriage, it is a learning experience to turn that off at the end of the day and allow my AWESOME husband take the lead. We are both looking for ways to improve in our marriage and this book looks like it would be a good reference.

Claygirlsings January 12, 2012 at 8:20 am

Tim Keller’s The Meaning of Marriage is the book I would like to win. I recently read about it on Pete Wilson’s blog withoutwax.tv and it sounds like something that I would learn a lot from.

Thanks for hosting the giveaway.

Debra January 12, 2012 at 11:53 am

The Love & Respect Experience by Emerson Eggerichs!

I’ve had this one recommended to me so many times -including part at our Premarriage class. My Hubby & I do a decent job a communication, but sometimes it’s the entire male/female thing were it seems like we are speaking two different languages that trips us up. :)

Debra January 12, 2012 at 11:56 am

A Side Note – I know this isn’t part of the contest but I highly recommend “A Lasting Promise”. We are finishing it up on our small group at church and the book has really great tools and ideas to help with communication.

If you read through it and actually take the time to do the exercises at the end of each chapter – it provides great conversation and insight with your spouse. The book itself can be a smidgen redundant, but hey – repetition is the best way to learn things!

Merritt January 12, 2012 at 1:40 pm

So true Debra! Thanks for the shout out about Lasting Promise. It’s probably been one of the most helpful books (with real, actionable takeaways) I’ve ever read about marriage. Thanks for entering!

Susan Criddle January 12, 2012 at 6:38 pm

The Love & Respect Experience by Emerson Eggerichs

They all look great and I went to our church library and got a few books by Keller and Thomas.

The book by Eggerichs about communication is ideal since any bump in our relationship tends to be with communication and my “female” feelings. I have the privilege of working with my husband for the business he started in 2001….and while he sees the forest (from 37000 feet going 700 miles per hour , a true pilot he is…), I see every cost, excel column-row, and plan to research and review.

So when we stay “balanced” it is a huge benefit. But there are moments when we get off balance. We both put our marriage and relationship first, so I would love to read this book to help understand “our” language.

Meredith Rainey January 15, 2012 at 11:47 am

I would like to win the first book, A Lasting Promise, because I know the conflict techniques and ways to handle unmet expectations could help improve my marriage and I also would like to have a guide to keeping a prayer journal as I’ve always wanted to do one but have never succeeded.

I would love to win Sacred Influence by Gary Thomas! I am getting married this spring and would love to be more equipped as I prepare to be a wife and learn to love my husband well. These all sound like wonderful books!

I’ve enjoyed reading your blog over the past year, Merritt, and I look forward to learning more about marriage as I become a newlywed myself. Thanks for sharing your struggles and joys with us!

Merritt January 18, 2012 at 10:21 am

Hi Amy – thanks so much for reading! And nice to “meet” you. Congrats on your engagement! I keep reminding myself that I shouldn’t be surprised that there are always new things to learn–about him, about marriage and about how God uses both to teach, mold and sanctify me! Thanks for your comment.

Amy January 18, 2012 at 10:19 am

I just subscribed via email as well. Thanks!

Jennie Plumlee January 18, 2012 at 12:20 pm

I’d be very interested in reading “The Meaning of Marriage” – I’ve read the others and would highly recommend them…but, this is the only one I haven’t read. I enjoy Keller and would like to learn from his teaching on the subject – I have a lot to learn when it comes to marriage.

Arianna Patrick January 18, 2012 at 1:57 pm

I would love to read the Tim Keller book. He’s so solid!

Amy January 20, 2012 at 3:56 am

I would be excited to read The Lasting Promise. The unique challenges of a second marriage after divorce have highlighted areas where I struggle in believing ‘it’s forever.’ I want to align my thinking and heart with what God says about my marriage!

S. Jensen January 20, 2012 at 2:34 pm

I’ve had The Meaning of Marriage on my list to read for awhile. One of the Sunday School classes at church is currently reading it, so it would be great to have my own copy!

I would love a copy of Sacred Influence. As someone still trying to work on picking a wedding date and marriage and wedding plans, I would love it if I could learn how to better humbly submit to and encourage my future husband even before we are married. I think this could help me a lot, as I have seen through my relationship with him that I struggle to not lead, although I am it supposed. God has definitely been working to humble me! I have read half of Sacred Marriage and love it.

I would LOVE to have the book: Sacred Influence by Gary Thomas

I am fighting for my marriage. I need to learn more about how to change myself, instead of tying to change my husband. Submitting is very difficult for me, from my experience growing up and my pre-Jesus days submitting meant and mostly still means doormat. I am on a journey to be closer to God, and by being closer to God, saving my marriage. After only being married for 2.5 years we hit a bump and there was an affair. Instead of leaving and taking the kids with me, I told him I would fight for him. We made a covenant to God and Im not going to end up on the wrong side of a statistic. I love my husband, what I need help with is knowing how to fully respect and be a helpmate for him.
