Our Story

Todd and I first met when he “crashed” my 35th birthday party with some mutual friends. A year later, some girlfriends and I decided we were tired of not having any guy friends so we invited a group of single guys from church to attend a concert held at a small local venue. Todd was one of the guys who accepted the invitation. From there, we became part of a group of six friends who hung out for the next year or so.

We ended up serving together in the same ministry at church, but neither of us ever considered the possibility of attraction. Several friends mentioned to each of us separately and on different occasions that we might consider dating the other and our answers were always, “Thanks, but no thanks.” Or “I’m not interested in her/him like that.

As a group, we often hung out at Todd’s apartment. He’d converted his living room into a movie theater with a wall-to-wall movie screen and surround-sound to entertain groups of friends for movie-watching parties (our favorite – HBO’s “Band of Brothers.”) He loves to entertain, and it wasn’t unusual for him to invite up to 20 people for dinner and a movie in his 800 square foot apartment.

ToddMerrittDancing Our StoryIt was the end of summer 2007 when Todd would tell you that God “flipped the switch” for him. Our group of friends gathered less frequently, and we didn’t see each other as often. Todd began to realize, that out of all his friends, I was the one he missed seeing the most. Within 30 days he had a plan of action and decided to ask me out, sure that I’d say yes! He asked on September 15th only to receive a wishy-washy “I’m not sure“, which he determined to be a “No.” But Todd believed we were “good for each other” and he didn’t allow my uncertainty to stand in the way of an honest friendship.

After that, I watched Todd be strong, honest, secure, and reassuring in our friendship, even when a dating relationship was the furthest thing from my mind (unusual as it was for me). He gained my respect over time, and I finally began to see he was different from who I thought he was…and from anyone I’d ever dated. I decided it was worth seeing what this faithful guy was really all about, so on December 14, 2007, we had our first date. And I must say, it was the best first date I’ve ever had.

Great story!
My husband and I also met through the most unlikely of circumstances and at first there was absolutely no chance of us being together. Step forward 6 years and I am married to most incredible loving man I have ever known. This love is something else and I never would have expected to find it where I did.

Hi Rachel – thanks so much for commenting! I love to hear stories of love coming from unexpected directions! How long have you been married?

We have been married just under a year and I absolutely love being married to him. Marriage, when it’s with the right person, seems entirely different from all the miserable accounts that you tend to read and hear about these days.

I’m slow to respond (probably b/c of all that packing & unpacking I did in July). Thanks for your comment, Rachael. I definitely agree that the right person (and the right perspective) helps a TON!

Hey Merrit,
Well, looks like you guys are at your new home! Congratulations, as I know this is such a huge answer to prayer and much anticiapated excitment.
This is awesome…so glad you are doing this…Parker and I so belive in marriage and also see how our culture has done a number on us to belive anything but the truth about it.

Thanks for reaching out to others, to share the truth with them!

Much Love,
Brandy

Just found your blog via twitter.

Thank you for sharing your story. It is such an encouragement to me. At 23 (just a month into it, actually), sometimes I feel I’ve already run out of time on this whole “finding the love of my life” thing. It is so nice when others share their story, offers hope.

Thank you for being willing to put your story out there.

Hi Candice – Thanks so much for stopping by! There is definitely HOPE! I’m a totally different person than I was in my 20s, and though it was a long wait, it was worth it for sure.

Nice to meet you! Come back any time. :)

What an uplifting blog! It’s great that you have such a fresh, yet traditional perspective. I am so thankful for my own story, though it’s much different than yours (I met my husband at 15!) and I can’t wait to explore this amazing covenant we’ve entered into.

Melissa – grateful for your comments! No matter the age, it’s certainly an AMAZING covenant. Thanks again for stopping by.
