Sleep Scuffles

by Merritt on May 24, 2012

“Hey Baby, did I dream that you scraped my leg with your toenail last night?”

Nope, that really happened,” said the Husband.

We don’t have a lot of sleep mishaps like this. And as it turns out my subsequent dream about blood dripping down my leg was a lot more severe than the tiny little scab I found on my shin that morning. All in all, the Husband is a pretty calm sleeper.

I’ve already mentioned that he’s out like a light within 5-10 minutes of laying his head on the pillow. In fact, it’s kind of become a race for me to get ready for bed faster these days in order to get there first so we can have those last few moments of the day together as he drifts off to sleepy land. Funny how important those minutes are the busier our lives have become.

I’m actually amazed we haven’t had more crazy sleep stuff go on in our marriage. I’ve always been told that I’m a sleep talker—though it’s never seemed to bother my sleepy-head-Husband. In fact he’s hardly noticed. I always want to know the next morning what he heard me say {it’s fascinating to me, especially to try to figure out what I was dreaming at the time}. But he never remembers. I’ve also been known to sleep walk a time or two. But not since we’ve been married.

Thankfully he totally missed me. But he certainly woke me up when his hand slammed into the wall. It left a dent. And his knuckles were bruised for several days afterwards {and he felt horrible when he realized how close he’d come to making contact with my face}. As a newish wife, I wondered what in the world was in store for us in the sleeping category.

But in that conversation among three couples, we all determined that the hopes we’d had {as women} to snuggle up to sleep in a big, cozy cuddle were quickly foiled when we realized his shoulder didn’t make a very good pillow. On top of that his hot-body-temperature during the night was enough to make a girl forgo any closeness in exchange for her own side of the bed. Not exactly what we imagined when we daydreamed about being married.

Today, we both love a little spooning right before sleep—not every night—but now and then. Still, we often wake the next morning to find ourselves back on our own side of the bed, curled up in our preferred sleeping position as if were the only one there. I guess some habits are hard to break.

What challenges, adjustments or crazy sleep stories do you have since getting married?
